Join Ann-Mary Lutzick at Prescott?s Phippen Museum for a visual presentation that explores both the benefits and drawbacks of the commercialization of Native American cultures at 1pm on Saturday July 5th. Ann-Mary, director of Winslow?s Old Trail?s Museum, will explore the partnership between the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railway all while dressed in an authentic ?Indian Detours? uniform. Together these two companies vigorously promoted travel to the Southwest and were an early innovator of ?cultural heritage tourism.? Travelers experienced an idealized version of the Southwest?s Native American cultures through the company?s grand hotels along the Santa Fe line, their Indian Department?s museum rooms and curio shops, and the Harveycar Indian Detours touring service. This lecture is presented with the cooperation of the Arizona Humanities Council.
